Ms. Deidra Pennington has 32 years of experience as a registered nurse and specializes in intensive care nursing. She worked for many years in Neuro-trauma ICU and Coronary Care, and also served in a leadership capacity as unit director for Neuro-trauma ICU. Deidra has extensive experience in injury prevention and was a former trauma outreach coordinator for Carilion Clinic. She was a recipient of the Healthcare with a Human Touch Award for achievements in injury prevention education. She continues to hold national certifications as a Child Passenger Safety Instructor and a CARFIT Coordinator for Mature Drivers., and has worked with the Virginia Department of Health and the Virginia Chiefs of Police as a trainer. In addition to her full time faculty role, Deidra serves as a faith community nurse and director of health ministry at her local church where she coordinates a group of volunteer parish nurses. She received the faculty award for Excellence in Scholarship for the 2010-2011 academic years. In addition to injury prevention, research interests include preceptor and student relations, as well as mentoring of student nurses.
