JCHS Alumni Association First Annual Golf Tournament
Friday, September 30, 2011 - 12:00am
On Friday, Sept. 30, 2011, the JCHS Alumni Association held their first annual golf tournament at the Botetourt Golf and Swim Club.
It was a beautiful fall day at the Club for our event, featuring incredible views of the Blue Ridge from the course.
The day began with our intrepid crew of alumni and volunteers signing over 80 participants into the tournament. All proceeds from the event went to support the JCHS Scholarship Fund, which helps our students in financial need.
Among our golfers were (left to right) JCHS student Jessie Toms; JCHS President Dr. Nathaniel L. Bishop; and JCHS Dean for Academic Affairs, Dr. Lisa Allison-Jones.
And, welcomed guests from outside of JCHS as well, including the husband of our Interim Alumni Relations Coordinator and Golf Tournament organizer Whitney Duff (left) and a friend. They were both dressed in their traditional Scottish kilts in celebration of the event!
Kim Roe, a member of the JCHS Alumni Association Board of Directors and Regional Practice Director for ER Administration with Carilion Clinic, poses with the "hole-in-one grand prize," furnished by Nelson Automotive of Martinsville.
As everyone geared up to hit the links, President Bishop spoke to the crowd and fired them up for an afternoon of golf, while thanking them for their participation.
The golfers then took to their carts in anticipation of getting started.
As they got ready to head onto the course, President Bishop posed with Sue Campbell, President of the JCHS Alumni Association Board of Directors, and JCHS student Cornelius Powell.

...and on his follow through!
He then watched his ball sail down the fairway toward the green!
Dozens of teams played in the tournament, including groups of JCHS students, alumni, faculty, staff and friends of the College.
The Tournament was a great opportunity to relax while supporting a worthwhile cause. And it gave Dr. Bishop the opportunity to welcome friends and family to join him in support of our students.
Many current JCHS students came out to support the tournament and their fellow students in need.
The weather for our event couldn't have been better with plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures. A perfect autumn afternoon!
Some of our golfers discuss the best way to get the darn ball on the green!
Larry Lilley, Assistant Professor in the JCHS Health Psychology Department, shows off his form—so to speak— before teeing off.
Many of our players took a moment to pose for a snapshot as they played through.
The golf tournament was held not only to raise money for our general scholarship fund, but also in celebration of the Inauguration of Dr. Nathaniel L. Bishop as the College's third President. It was the culminating event in a weeklong celebration held at JCHS.
Dr. Bishop shares a chuckle with Kurt Neidigh, Associate Program Director and Assistant Professor in the JCHS Mathematics and Science Program.

Eric Vogelstein, Assistant Professor in the JCHS Humanities and Social Sciences Program, tees off at the golf tournament.
As our teams progressed, it was hard not to be distracted by the breathtaking views and trees that were just starting to show their fall colors.
Throughout the afternoon, Dr. Bishop greeted all of the players including those he personally invited to play alongside him in the tournament.
After everyone had completed the course, they met in the clubhouse to hand out tournament prizes. Here, we find (left to right) Ave Mitta, Program Director for the Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) Program, sharing a smile with Karen Layman, Academic Fieldwork Coordinator for the OTA Program and a member of the JCHS Alumni Association Board of Directors.
Nearby, Dr. Bishop posed with Jeannie Garber, Assistant Professor in the JCHS Nursing Program.
All of us at Jefferson College of Health Sciences would like to thank everyone who came out to support the Alumni Association, the Scholarship Fund and JCHS as a whole. Everyone had a great time during the golf tournament and we are currently planning more fun alumni events for the very near future. We hope you'll join us!
