On Friday, Aug. 17, 2012, JCHS held its annual Convocation Ceremony at St. John's Episcopal Church, just across Jefferson Street from the JCHS campus at Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital.
The day began bright and early with our faculty processing to St. John's from the JCHS campus. Here, they walk down Reid Drive as the sun peeks out from behind the Community Hospital building.
Before everyone headed across the street to the church, we paused for this snapshot of our faculty by the JCHS sign at Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital on Jefferson Street.
Then, our faculty headed across Jefferson Street toward St. John's with the help of Carilion Clinic police, who halted traffic briefly for us.
The procession to St. John's was led by JCHS President Nathaniel L. Bishop on the right and Dr. Ava Porter on the left. Dr. Porter, the Chair of JCHS Nursing, helps to lead the way because she is the current recipient of the JCHS Mission Possible Award. This award is given annually to a faculty member, nominated by her colleagues, for dedication in going above and beyond to support the mission, vision and values of JCHS and Carilion Clinic.
With services dating back to December 1892, St. John's Episcopal Church was a beautiful location for our 2012 Convocation event. The building, now designated a historic landmark, has expanded twice over the past 116 years to better serve their parish, which now numbers 1,500.
As our faculty processed in and took their spots, accompanied by wonderful music from St. John's organist David Charles Campbell, Ava Porter was all smiles with Dean for Student Affairs Scott Hill nearby.
President Bishop was the first to step to the podium, welcoming everyone to our 2012 ceremony.
Rev. Barkley Thompson, St. John's Rector, led the Invocation.

Mr. Verne Baker, M.S., Senior Vice-President at Carilion Clinic, provided our 2012 Convocation Address.
In his role at Carilion Clinic, Mr. Baker oversees Carilion’s Medicine, Pharmacy, Oncology, Guest Services and Palliative Care operations.
In his address, Mr. Baker welcomed our new students and spoke about the path that brought him to where he is today.
Mr. Baker ended his address by bringing three of our new students onstage and performing a magic trick. Each student began with a red, a blue and a white scarf. They then put them all in a bag and came out with a combined American flag scarf. His objective was to show our new students that they must work together and combine their talents to provide the best care possible.
At the conclusion of his remarks, Dr. Bishop presented a gift to Mr. Baker in appreciation of his time and expertise.
Our new students were then asked to stand to be recognized and to recite our mission statement.
Our faculty then recessed from the sancutuatry, and our Academic Chairs and President Bishop greeted our new students at the signing ceremony. During this annual tradition, our new students sign in, signifying that they are officially part of JCHS.
Dr. Sharon Hatfield, Chair of Community Health Sciences and Associate Professor in the Healthcare Management and Respiratory Therapy Programs, congratulates a new student after she signed in with a JCHS keychain.
Dr. Francis C. Dane, Chair of Arts & Sciences, Interim Program Director of math & Science, and Professor in the Health Psychology Program, shakes hands with a new student.
Our President, Dr. Bishop, always makes sure to add a personal touch to our Convocation Ceremony by welcoming our new students himself.
Dr. Glen Mayhew, Associate Dean for Institutional Effectiveness, Interim Chair of Rehabilitation & Wellness and Associate Professor, hand a JCHS keychain to a new student.

After the Convocation Ceremony, the College community gathered upstairs from the sanctuary to celebrate with some great food and friendship!
Just down the street from St. John's is the Roanoke City market building, where out 'Welcome Back JCHS Students" banner was hung. To all of our new students at JCHS, we echo the sentiment of our banner by saying, "WELCOME!" To all of our returning students, faculty and staff, we say "WELCOME BACK!" Let's have a great 2012-2013 academic year at Jefferson College of Health Sciences!
