On Friday, September 7, 2012, JCHS held its annual Faculty and Staff Picnic at Greenhill Park in Salem, Virginia.
It was a beautiful late summer afternoon to share some laughs with coworkers and friends, just like Connie Cook, JCHS Director of Enrollment Management, did.
It also gave us the chance to welcome new faces to our community, like Laura Lee Whitten (left), a new Assistant Professor in the Nursing Program, who was greeted with a hug by Beth Biggio, Clinical Resource Associate in Nursing.
And while the two folks in this picture without a tail—Coordinator of Student Affairs Elizabeth Costa and Residence Life Coordinator Jennifer Martin—we also said hello to Nickels, our unofficial stand-in for Jeff the Blue Healer. (Nickels, by the way, is Elizabeth's faithful companion.)
We also were introduced to the family members and loved ones of some of our colleagues, including Billy Boswell, the fiancé of our Assistant Director of Admissions Sarah Ross.
Nearby, George Steer, Associate Professor in Math and Science, strikes up a conversation with Judy Lash, Associate Professor in the Physician Assistant Program.
Jeannie Garber, Assistant Professor in the Nursing Program, points out some of the sites to a friend.
All smiles were (left to right) Amanda Ellinger, JCHS Sponsored projects Coordinator; Lynn Freeman, Business office Assistant; and Ave Mitta, Director of the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program.
Some of us even got a nuzzle, like Linda Cochran, Director of Clinical Education for Respiratory Therapy, did!
Wait a minute! That's Billy again, fiancé of Sarah Ross, with Ashton Downs, JCHS Admissions Counselor. Where's Sarah?!
Oh, there's Sarah hanging out with Susan Booth, JCHS Safety Officer.
One of the biggest hits of the picnic was the delicious food!
Here we find Elizabeth Costa and Scott Hill, JCHS Dean for Student Affairs, loading up from the buffet! Yummy!
The daughter of Kimberley Whiter, Instructor in the JCHS Medical Laboratory Science Program, enjoyed a biscuit on a blanket, picnic-style...
...or, maybe she DIDN'T enjoy it...
...yep, she enjoyed it.
Amanda Ellinger talks with Scott Hill, though he seems kinda laser-focused on that plate, doesn't he?
Many of those attending the picnic enjoyed the covered patio as a refuge from the evening sun.
Just a couple dozen yards away was where the real fun began: an inflatable slide and bouncy house!
In front of the slide, posing pretty as a picture were (left to right) Courtney Watson, Assistant Professor in the Humanities and Social Sciences Program; Amanda Ellinger; and Kimberly Whiter.
On the slide, Elizabeth Costa enjoys some "down time" with Livie, daughter of JCHS Director of Counseling & Wellness Jennifer Slusher.
Meanwhile, things were "hopping" over in the bouncy house!
Priscilla DuBois, Administrative Secretary to the President, checks out the bouncy house for herself. C'mon, Pris, jump in there! You know you want to!
A little farther down the lawn, a game of Cornhole was in progress. Here, we find Scott Hensley, JCHS Director of Business Services, tossing the old bean bag.
Under the tent, everyone was treated to live music from "Jefferson Skateboard," our own in-house band led by vocalist De-dee Foti, Associate Director of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program.
One of the members of Jefferson Skateboard is our very own President, Dr. Nathaniel L. Bishop! We find him here playing bass.
Under the tent, Carolyn Lyon, Assistant Professor in Nursing, enjoys the music with a guest.
The weather for our picnic this year was perfect. It was a warm afternoon into evening, with clear skies and just the right amount of shade under the trees to kick back and relax in.
Check out De-dee Foti signing her heart out along with Al Overstreet, JCHS Director of Academic Support Services.
Also jamming along to the music and enjoying the afternoon was Nickels, who by this time, had taken a seat in one of the chairs!
"Look intoi my eyes..." Jennifer Slusher tries to hypnotize Sarah Ross.
Glen Mayhew, Associate Dean for Institutional Effectiveness, chats with some of our picnic attendees.
JCHS Admissions Counselor Lauren Miley cracks up as she talks with friends and coworkers at the picnic.
JCHS Dean for Administrative Services Anna Millirons arrives at the picnic with her daughter and husband.
Melody Sharp (left), Director of the Post-Licensure and Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing Programs, listens as Judy Lash relates the adventures of a PA faculty member's treacherous week.
Jennifer Slusher and Livie play with keep away with a beach ball. Amazingly, Livie was able to pretty much keep it away from Jennifer all evening!
Lynn Freeman smiles with one of her beautiful daughter. This shot was quite an accomplishment, as it was taken with a telephoto lens since Lynn's daughter hid her face every time she saw the photographer trying to get her picture!
Another one of our little Blue Healers enjoyng herself at the Faculty Staff Picnic event.
Janice Taylor (left), Department Secretary in the JCHS nursing Program, talks with friends and colleague Bob Reese, Director of the Health Psychology Program (far right).
Sharon Hatfield, Chair of Community Health Sciences, talks with friends and colleagues at the picnic.
JCHS Dean for Academic Affairs Lisa Allison-Jones shooting the breeze with Amanda Ellinger and Courtney Watson.
Larry Lilley, Assistant Professor in Nursing, watches his sons enjoy the inflatable slide at the picnic.
Up close and personal! This is Jennifer Martin. She forbid having her picture taken. Therefore, she must be punished by having her picture taken at close range with a telephoto lens. You're welcome, Jennifer!
As the evening came to a close, Nickels decided to pose for a glamour shot. What a good lookin' pup! Jeff better be careful or he's going to lose his job as our mascot!<P>
We hope everyone enjoyed the 2012 JCHS Faculty and Staff Picnic. Mark your calendars to join us next year for this great annual event!
