On Friday, December 12, 2014, Jefferson College of Health Sciences held our Winter Commencement Ceremony in the Special Events Center at the Berglund Center in Roanoke, Virginia.
A total of 131 Jefferson College students on the graduate and baccalaureate degree levels accepted their diplomas and became alumni of the College during the event. Jefferson College welcomed Ralph Whatley, M.D., Chairman of the Department of Medicine and Chief Quality Officer at Carilion Clinic, as our Commencement Speaker. Ralph Whatley, M.D.
Dr. Ralph Whatley is the Chairman of the Department of Medicine and Chief Quality Officer at Carilion Clinic. He is also Professor of Medicine and Chair of the Department of Medicine at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.
Dr. Whatley received his undergraduate and his medical degree from Duke University. He completed specialty training in Internal Medicine (University of Texas) and Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine (University of Utah). He has served on the faculty at the University of Utah School of Medicine and East Carolina University, where he served as Chairman of the Department before moving to Carilion and the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.
Past and present research interests include vascular injury, endothelial cell dysfunction and acute lung injury. He is a member of a number of professional and honorary societies and has authored many research papers, reviews and book chapters. He has also served on the Boards of Directors of philanthropic and service organizations.
