New Student Orientation

Fall 2016 New Student Orientation

New students for the fall 2016 semester are required to attend New Student Orientation (NSO).

When: Monday, August 15, 2016
Where: St. John's Episcopal Church
(Park in the college parking garage and walk directly across the street) 
Who: Undergraduate & Graduate Students (select online programs are exempt as noted below)

Students will be divided into two sessions based on their programs.  Please refer to the below list to find your assigned time:

Morning Session-- 8:30-11:30am
​Medical Laboratory Sciences
Nursing (TBSN, ABSN, & VBSN)
Physician Assistant
Surgical Technology

Afternoon Session-- 12:30- 3:30pm
​Biomedical Sciences
Emergency Services
Health & Exercise Science
Health Psychology
Health Sciences
Occupational Therapy
Occupational Therapy Assistant
Physical Therapy Assistant
Respiratory Therapy 

Breakfast will be provided for the morning session and lunch will be provided for the afternoon session.  As orientation is mandatory, students do not need to register in advance. 

Please note that seating is limited. As such, orientation is for students only. Please do not bring parents, family, friends, or children with you; there will not be space to accommodate them. 

On orientation day, you will also have the opportunity to get your student ID badge and parking permit, take a tour, attend a technology session, or visit the bookstore.  Technology sessions will be held from 10:00-11:00 a.m. and 1:00- 2:00 p.m. in room 505.  Campus tours will be offered at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. and will leave from the Library on the 5th floor.  College facilities and offices will also be open for you to visit on their regular department schedules. If you are interested in meeting with your advisor or professors during these open-house periods, please contact them or your department secretary directly to make an appointment.

Jefferson Success Modules

All new students are required to complete the online Jefferson Success Modules prior to arriving on campus for orientation.  You can access this course in Blackboard beginning July 15.  You are required to complete it by August 15.  This course will give you an overview of the services available to you at the College.  We also encourage you to check your Jefferson College email account periodically over the summer.  If you have difficulty with your email or Blackboard accounts, please call the Help Desk at 540-224-1599.

Online New Student Orientation

Due to the online nature of these programs, students enrolled in the following must complete the Jefferson Success Modules and are exempt from the on campus New Student Orientation and Convocation:

  • Healthcare Management 
  • Healthcare Administration
  • RN- BSN Program
  • MSN Program
  • Family Nurse Practitioner
  • Doctor of Health Sciences
  • Doctor of Nursing Practice 

Convocation Ceremony

Who: Mandatory for all new students starting undergraduate and graduate programs for the fall 2016 semester.

What: The Convocation Ceremony is the formal start to your College experience--much as commencement is the formal conclusion. Faculty will process, during the ceremony, with caps and gowns. Students should dress appropriately (something you would wear to a graduation ceremony). A reception will follow the ceremony.

When: Tuesday, August 16, 2016. Doors open for seating at 8 a.m. The ceremony will run from 9 to 11 a.m.

Where:  St. John's Episcopal Church (1 Mountain Avenue Southwest, Roanoke). Students will be able to park in College parking areas and walk to the ceremony.

*As with New Student Orientation, this event is for Jefferson College students, faculty, and staff only. Due to limited seating, please do not bring parents, family, friends, or children with you; there will not be space to accommodate them.  

Student ID Badges and Parking Passes

College ID badges are available to be made between the hours of 9 a.m.-11 a.m. and 1 p.m.-3 p.m. 

New students should bring one form of photo identification with them to the Student Affairs Suite on the 4th Floor of Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital (CRCH) to have their College ID made.  

Student Affairs also issues parking passes.  These passes are free, but students must fill out a registration form with their car and license plate information.
