Spring 2012 JCHS Pinning Ceremonies, Award Presentations 
and Graduation Celebrations
April & May 2012

As the 2011-2012 academic year came to a close at Jefferson College of Health Sciences, we celebrated the achievements of our students, faculty and staff at several events on campus and across the Roanoke Valley. 

From pinning ceremonies and award presentations to graduation celebrations, our community took the opportunity to turn the spotlight on all of the people whose hard work and dedication continue to make JCHS southwest Virginia's healthcare leader in education. 

Below are photos from several of the events, along with a brief description of each. We hope you enjoy these snapshots!

 2012 JCHS Research & Scholarship Finale

The annual JCHS Research & Scholarship Finale is an event in which we present awards 
to our faculty, hear oral presentations on academic research from faculty and students and 
display summaries of our academic research in poster form.

JCHS faculty, staff and studnets filled 
a large classroom on the sixth floor of 
Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital 
for our 2012 event.

Before the finale started, those in 
attendance could browse dozens of 
posters around the room detailing 
academic studies from this year.

 

Amanda Ellinger, JCHS Sponsored 
Projects Coordinator, was one of those 
who organized our 2012 Research Finale.

 

Viki Neurater, another coordinator 
of the Finle, shared a laugh with faculty members Glenn Kent and Bill McVaugh. 

 

Our first faculty award recipient was 
Milena Staykova, Nursing, who was 
recogized with the Faculty Excellence 
in Research & Scholarship Award.

 

Linda Cochran, Respiratory Therapy, 
was our 2012 recipient of the 
JCHS Excellence in 
Advising Award.

 

Warren Clark, Nursing, recieved the 
2012 Excellence in Student 
Scholarship Development Award.

 

Ave Mitta, Occupational Therapy 
Assistant, was honored with the 2012 
Excellence in Teaching Award.

 

After the award presentations, we began 
our oral presentations with Glenn Kent, 
Health Psychology, who spoke about his research into Triune Health: The 
Psychology of Eating.

 

Ally Bowersock, took the podium next 
to speak about her research into the 
influences of medical residents' attitudes 
and behaviors in relation to their communciation and counseling skills.

In spring 2011, the Carilion Clinic School of Clinical Laboratory Science was integrated 
into the JCHS Biomedical Sciences Program. Each year, the program celebrates its 
graduating students with a graduation celebration held at Carilion Roanoke 
Memorial Hospital.  

This beautiful cake was hand made 
to commemorate the 2012 Medical 
Laboratory Sciences Graduation
 Celebration.

The annual JCHS Respiratory Therapy Program Pinning Ceremony is held at the 
Sheraton Hotel and Conference Center in Roanoke to highlight the accomplishments 
and upcoming graduation of RT students at the Spring Commencement event in May.

The 2012 Pinning Ceremony drew a large 
crowd of students, faculty and staff from the Respiratory Therapy Program, 
as well family, friends and loved ones. 

The event kicked off with a welcome 
from JCHS President Dr. Nathaniel L. 
Bishop, who congratulated the students on their well-earned achievements.

recognition of their impending graduation 
at our 2012 Commencement Ceremony.

At the conclusion of the 2012 Respiratory Therapy Pinning Ceremony, the students posed with the RT faculty and Preceptors 
for a group portrait. Twenty RT students received their diplomas at 
our 2012 graduation event.

The JCHS Master of Science in Nursing Program holds a graduation celebration each 
spring to recognize the hard work and dedication of graduating MSN students, as well 
as the Program's faculty and staff. The event is held at the Vinton War Memorial in 
Vinton, Virginia.

The JCHS Master of Science in Nursing 
Program held a ceremony to celebrate 
the graduation of their class of 2012 on 
May 8, 2012 at the Vinton War Memorial 
in Vinton, Virginia.

The program kicked off with MSN Program 
Director Patty Vari (left) and Chair of the 
JCHS Nursing Department Ava Porter 
welcoming the students and their families 
and loved ones to the event.

 

After the introductions, which 
included remarks from JCHS President 
Dr. Nathaniel L. Bishop, our guests 
enjoyed a tasty buffet.

 

Around the room, our graduating 
MSN students presented posters 
that detailed their research conducted 
while in the program.

 

 The MSN students presented their posters 
in two shifts, so half of them could enjoy 
the event with their families while the other half spoke to those at their tables.

 

The event provides our students 
with the opportunity to explain 
their research methods and how 
they arrived at the results.

The JCHS Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program holds its Pinning Ceremony for the 
graduating class of students each winter and spring at the Scottish Rite Auditorium in 
Roanoke, just a short distance from the JCHS campus. The audience is composed of 
proud parents, friends and family members, as well as JCHS faculty who shepherded 
these students through years of training.

At the beginning of the Pinning 
Ceremony, the 2012 BSN 
students enter the Auditorium, 
surrounded by
families and friends.

The 2012 ceremony guest speaker 
was Rebecca Clark, Ph.D., 
Senior Director of Nursing Research 
and Evidence Based practice 
at Carilion Clinic.

 

The Pre-licensure BSN student remarks
were given by Meredith McCauley.

 

The Post-licensure BSN student remarks
were presented by Wendy Arthur.

 

After the student remarks, it was time 
to begin presenting the pins to the Post-
licensure graduates.

 

Dr. Melody Sharp presented the 
Post-licensure Excellence in 
Nursing Award to Wendy Arthur.

 

Then, the Nursing faculty members 
presented pins to the Pre-licensure 
students.

 

Dr. Rebecca Greer presented the 
Pre-licensure Excellence in 
Nursing Award to Jessica Creasy.

 

The students then took part in the "Lighting 
of the Lamp." The lamp is an iconic symbol 
of the dedication nurses undertake when 
they enter the profession.

 

Once their lamps were lit, the students 
read the Nurse's Pledge aloud, led by 
JCHS Nursing faculty member 
Cindy Marcum.

At the conclusion of every academic year, the JCHS Department of Arts & Sciences 
hosts an awards ceremony to recognize those students who excelled during the year as 
well as the faculty and staff who supported those students and helped them reach the 
culmination of their education at our college.

The 2012 Arts & Sciences Awards 
Ceremony was held on the JCHS 
campus at Carilion Roanoke 
Community Hospital in one of our 
large classrooms.

The event was attended by a large 
crowd of JCHS students, faculty 
and staff, as well as the families and 
loved ones of some of our 
graduating students.

 

The ceremony began with a welcome 
from Darrell Shomaker, Program 
Director of the JCHS Humanities 
and Social Sciences Department.

 

After the welcome, faculty had a 
chance to chat with students and 
their families while enjoying a 
wonderful buffet.

 

JCHS Dean for Academic Affairs 
Dr. Lisa Allison-Jones served as 
guest speaker at the event.

 

Next, JCHS Science Lab Coordinator 
Susan Tolliver made a surprise speech 
in honor of student Jennifer Nutter.

 

Susan and Jennifer have worked very 
closely over the last few years and Susan 
wanted to pay tribute to the hard work and 
dedication of her protégé.

 

Jennifer was awarded the Outstanding 
Student in Biomedical Sciences Award
by Dr. William McVaugh, Program 
Director of JCHS Math & Science.

 

Dr. Francis C. Dane, JCHS Chair of
Arts & Sciences presented the 
Outstanding Student Award in Health 
Psychology to Victoria Fellows.

 

 

Laura Link, Associate Program 
Director of Medical Laboratory 
Sciences, accepted the Outstanding 
Student Award in MLS on behalf of 
Jessica Fetters, who was in Alaska 
at the time interviewing for a job!

Healthcare Management Graduation Celebration 
and Upsilon Phi Delta Honor Society Ceremony

The JCHS Healthcare Management Program sponsored a recognition dinner at 
Montano's for their 2012 graduating class. Also, HCM inducted six students into 
the Upsilon Phi Delta Society by presenting them with their honor cords. Followed 
by the awards presentations for the Outstanding Academic Achievement award and 
the Outstanding Student Achievement award.

This beautiful cake was made in 
honor of the celebration.
