Is the Time Right?

If this is the right time for you to get your Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree, Jefferson College of Health Science (JCHS) is the right place for you. JCHS offers two MSN degree programs: one in Nursing Systems Management and one in the Nurse Clinician Educator specialty. Both programs of study were planned for the working professional nurse. Courses are offered through a combination of online instruction coupled with didactic classroom instruction. Students come on campus for orientation and only two to four times during each course.

Courses in the MSN programs are taught by faculty members who have real world nursing experiences. Many maintain certification in their areas of expertise, hold joint appointments in healthcare systems or are doing research in healthcare. These same faculty members are available as teachers and advisors to you as you move through your program of study at JCHS.

We deliberately keep our class sizes small so graduate faculty can take a personal interest in students.

Full-time students can complete the program in two years of intense study. Part-time study is available. Registered nurses are admitted to the program with a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) from an accredited nursing program. Registered nurses with a bachelor’s degree in another field can be admitted to the MSN program. Generally, students without a BSN will only need to take 2 – 3 leveling courses. These courses can be taken in the summer prior to the start of fall classes. Some are offered online.

Accreditation

The Master of Science in Nursing Program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) at One DuPont Circle, NW, Suite 530, Washington, D.C. 20036. Phone 202-887-6791. In 2007, the MSN program was reaccredited for a 10-year period of time.

Joining the Ranks of a Certified Nurse

Once students graduate from the MSN program in the Nursing Systems Management specialty, they are eligible to take the American Nurse Credentialing Center certification examination as either a Board Certified Nurse Executive (NE–BC) or a Board Certified Nurse Executive Advanced (NEA-BC). The level depends on their experience as nurse managers or executives. Students who graduate from the Nurse Clinician Educator specialty are eligible to take the National League for Nursing examination as a Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) after two years of nursing education practice.

Course Format
Full-time MSN program students take three (3) courses or nine (9) credits a semester. Part-time study is available. Courses are offered in ten to fifteen week blocks of time with 2-4 class meetings per course, depending on which format best fits the course requirements and student progress in the course.

Two courses are interprofessional education courses. These courses are IPE 507, Ethical and Legal Practice in Healthcare and IPE 509, Research and Evidence-Based Practice. Graduate nursing students take these two courses with students from the Occupational Therapy and Physician Assistant Master of Science programs.
