Why Live in the Residence Hall?
|
.gif) One of the benefits for students who choose to live on campus is an enhanced overall collegiate experience. Residence halls can help students to develop social connections with other students who are dealing with similar successes and challenges, both inside and outside of the classroom. Additionally, research has shown that there are other advantages to living on campus including better academic performance, a higher level of engagement in the larger campus community, lessened participation in risky behaviors such as underage drinking, and stronger persistence toward degree completion (Pascarella and Terenzini, 2005).
Living on campus is also very cost effective. The median gross rent for an off campus apartment in Roanoke is just under $700 per month (www.city-data.com). This usually does not include the cost of utilities, such as electricity and water, which can fluctuate month-to-month. Rental rates also do not usually include the cost of cable or internet.
The cost to live in The Patrick Henry for the Fall 2013- Spring 2014 academic year is $2,835 per semester. The housing fee is a convenient flat rate that covers rent, water, sewer, trash, electricity, cable, high-speed internet and access to an on-site gym. The Patrick Henry is a 5 minute walk from Jefferson College of Health Sciences. |

Residence Hall Amenities
|
.gif) The residence hall is located within the newly renovated Patrick Henry, which used to serve as a landmark hotel in downtown Roanoke. After the hotel closed, the building underwent extensive renovations and in 2011 was re-opened as luxury apartments. Students from Jefferson College of Health Sciences reside on the third through sixth floors.
There are three types of apartments within the Patrick Henry. Studio apartments can hold up to two students. One bedroom apartments can hold up to three students. Two bedroom apartments can hold up to five students. Each resident student receives one twin sized bed, one dresser, one desk and one desk chair. Any other furniture items and decorations are the responsibility of the student. Additionally, students are responsible for bringing their own kitchenware (plates, silverware, pots, pans, etc.) and for purchasing necessary toiletries for the bathroom.
Each apartment unit within the Patrick Henry features the following:
· Hardwood Floors
· Granite Countertops
· Full Kitchen Featuring Stainless Steel Appliances, Including a Dishwasher and Garbage Disposal
· Washer and Dryer
Additionally, residents of the building enjoy the following:
· Fitness Center Featuring Cardio Equipment, Free Weights, and an X-Box Kinect
· Secure Access Through Use of Proximate Cards
· On-Site Mail Delivery Directly from USPS/FedEx/UPS
· Private Food Vendors on the Ground Level
The Patrick Henry is a unique property, with the floor plans for each apartment varying in layout. Because of this, it is difficult to provide pictures of what each unit looks like. The Coordinator of Residence Life is a full-time professional who resides in the Patrick Henry. Essential job functions include ensuring that the residential experience is a positive and engaging one for students; supervision of Resident Advisors; coordination of the day-to-day management of the residence hall; and assisting with student needs and concerns.

It is my sincere pleasure to have the opportunity to work with all of you this upcoming year. My husband and I hail from Martinsville, Virginia. I graduated from the University of Virginia in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in African-American Studies. I went on to pursue my graduate studies in College Student Affairs Administration at the University of Georgia, and graduated in 2008 with a Master of Education degree. I have worked as a Resident Advisor, a Graduate Resident, and a full-time professional in Housing & Residence Life for the past 10 years. I count it a privilege to have worked at Johnson C. Smith University, the University of Georgia, Georgia Tech, and most recently Virginia Tech. I look forward to getting to meet each of you and having the opportunity to make your residential experience at Jefferson College a meaningful and impactful one.
Resident Advisors, also known as RAs, are student paraprofessionals who live in the Patrick Henry residence hall. RAs are primarily responsible for getting to know all students in the residence hall and helping to build a strong community. RAs provide a variety of social and educational programs for residents, carry out administrative functions associated with the residence hall, and uphold College policies, state and federal law. Additionally, one RA is on duty every night of the week beginning at 8pm and concluding at 7am the next morning in order to assist with any student issues that arise.
 Lindsay McIntosh3rd Floor Resident Advisor
I am a sophomore at Jefferson College of Health Sciences in the Bachelor's of nursing program. I went to Roanoke College for 2 years for Biology and then transferred here to pursue nursing. I really want to work in the E.R or work in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, or Pediatrics. If I'm not working or sleeping, I'm doing something with my friends. We are often at the lake, hiking or making bonfires. I love to go hiking, kayak and just be outdoors. I'm very excited to be a Resident Advisor and to get to know all of my residents. I look forward to having a fun year with everyone!

My name is Tim Carter and I am from Frederickburg, Virginia. I am a junior in the Emergency Services program. I came to Jefferson College of Health Sciences to get a good education, make new friends, and have a good time. I am very friendly and always looking forward to meeting new people.

I am a senior at Jefferson College of Health Sciences in the Health Psychology Program. I am from Halifax, Virginia and I am interested in taking on a career in social work. In my spare time, I like to hang with friends, watch movies, write, and just have fun. I love helping those in need and that includes the residents. I will work toward providing a safe, fun, and enjoyable environment for those who will be residing in the Patrick Henry. A note to all residents, never hesitate to knock on my door or call, I will always be available to help. I look forward to meeting and getting to know you guys.

My name is Bryan Haring and I am a sophomore at Jefferson College of Health Sciences. I am in the Emergency Services program. I am from Caroline County, Virginia. I have decided that I want to be a paramedic/firefighter. In my spare time I love to hang out with my friends, watch movies, go walking, and sleeping. My passion is to help those in need no matter where they are. I will strive to provide a safe, fun, relaxing environment. A quick note to any residents: do not hesitate to run by my room if you need anything, or call me as well. I cannot wait to meet you all.

I am a Second semester Junior in the Nursing program. I am from Tacoma, WA. I am planning on working as a registered nurse in Washington State when I graduate from JCHS. In my spare time I like to watch movies, play basketball, cook and eat, hang out with friends, and pretty much anything that will give me a break in my studying. I will be working to provide for all residents a fun, safe, and helpful environment in the Patrick Henry which will assist you in being a successful student here at JCHS. I am very excited to meet you all and look forward to helping you make a smooth transition into life as a college student, and resident in the Patrick Henry.

Residence Hall Tours
|
If you are interested in taking a tour of the JCHS residence hall in The Patrick Henry, that can be arranged by working with your Admissions Counselor. When you schedule your campus tour, let your counselor know that you are considering living on campus and that you would like to see The Patrick Henry. They will then arrange a walking tour which includes viewing an example of a studio apartment. The Admissions office can be reached at (540) 985-8483. Please note that it may not be possible to view the residence hall if the tour is not arranged in advance.
Another option for students who have been admitted into a program of study at JCHS is Accepted Students Day, which will be held on Saturday, April 13 2013. Students who attend Accepted Students Day will have the opportunity to tour The Patrick Henry as a part of the day’s activities. Residence Life Contracts will also be available on this day for students who are interested in reserving a space. Additionally, students who tour the residence hall will receive a free JCHS Residence Life t-shirt! |

Paying for Housing
|
Often, there are a lot of questions related to funding for housing accommodations. Applying for financial aid in the form of loans, scholarships, grants, etc. can be a very tedious and complex process. If you have questions or concerns about how to pay for housing, it is best that you direct them either to the Financial Aid Office at (540) 985-8492 or the Bursar’s Office (540) 985-8272. |

Year Round Living
|
Beginning with the 2013-2014 academic year, students will not be required to vacate the residence hall during College break periods. This is a change that has been made in an effort to better serve the diverse needs of our residential student population. So, during Thanksgiving, winter and spring breaks, resident students will now be allowed to remain in the residence hall. There will be no extra fees associated with remaining over breaks; the only requirement will be that residents sign up in advance so that Residence Life and Patrick Henry staff members will be aware of their presence and able to account for them.
Additionally, students who sign up to live in the residence hall for two consecutive terms will not be required to vacate the residence hall during the break between terms. So, for instance, if a student has signed up for the Summer 2013 term as well as the Fall 2013-Spring 2014 term, he/she will not be required to vacate the residence hall at the conclusion of the summer term. They will be allowed to remain in the residence hall until the commencement of the fall term. |

Accommodations for Students with Disabilities
|
Students requesting special accommodation due to a disability that may affect living in the residence hall should contact Emily Moore, Disability Coordinator for Jefferson College of Health Sciences. She can be contacted via e-mail at EHMoore@jchs.edu, or via telephone at (540) 985-8449. Students will be required to provide necessary documentation of their disability to Emily, and she will work to determine what, if any, special accommodations are necessary and can be provided. She will communicate this information to the Coordinator of Residence Life. The earlier that we are aware of your needs the more successful we will be in accommodating you. It is strongly suggested that students requesting special accommodation meet with Emily before submitting a signed Residence Life Contract. |

Residence Life Contracts
|
Roommate Request Forms and Residence Life Contracts for the Fall 2013-Spring 2014 academic year can be found below. Please note the following:
· A Residence Life Contract is the only document required in order to reserve a space in The Patrick Henry. There is no housing deposit required; instead of paying a deposit up front, the cost to repair any damages caused by the student will be added to the student’s account at the conclusion of the term.
· New, first-year students will be given priority consideration until June 1, 2013.
· The Residence Life Contract is a binding, legal document, much like a standard lease agreement that you would sign for an apartment. The only way that you will not be responsible for paying housing fees for the entire academic year once you sign and return the contract is if you decide not to enroll in classes at Jefferson College of Health Sciences, or meet a strict set of criteria set forth in the contract.
· Current students residing in the Patrick Henry must submit Residence Life Contracts for the Fall 2013-Spring 2014 academic year no later than Monday, April 1st at 5pm for guaranteed accommodation in the Patrick Henry. Contracts will continue to be accepted after the April 1st deadline; however, accommodations cannot be guaranteed for current residents who turn their contracts in after the priority deadline.
· Students living off campus may apply to live on campus at any time. However, applications for off campus students will not be considered on a priority basis until after April 1, 2013.
· From June 1, 2013 and forward, all applications will be prioritized according to the date the completed contract is received by the Coordinator of Residence Life.
Everyone will have a roommate or roommates. Single rooms are not offered in The Patrick Henry. Additionally, students cannot request specific types of apartments (studio versus one bedroom, etc.). The Coordinator of Residence Life will strive to accommodate roommate requests, provided that all roommates have completed the Residence Life Contract, and completed Roommate Request Forms in which all parties indicate that they want to live with one another. All roommate requests are not guaranteed to be met. Roommate assignments may be changed at any time at the discretion of the Coordinator of Residence Life.

Housing for Students in Graduate & Accelerated Programs of Study
|
For the 2013-2014 academic year, we are pleased to offer semester-by-semester Residence Life Contracts for students who are enrolled in the following programs:
· Physicians Assistant (PA)
· Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN)
· Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT)
· Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)
· RU Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT)
These contracts are being offered in the hope that students in the above programs will be able to enjoy convenient, luxurious, and affordable housing that will allow for flexibility with clinical rotations and/or other academic pursuits that may prevent them from committing to an entire academic year. These students will be placed in double occupancy apartments (while spaces last). Additionally, every effort will be made to place students in similar programs of study together, and on the uppermost floor of the residence hall (which tends to be the quietest).
The housing fee will include electricity, water, sewer, trash, cable, high-speed internet and access to an on-site gym. Students in aforementioned programs will have the option to sign up for either the fall or spring semester; or both. The cost to live in The Patrick Henry for the Fall 2013- Spring 2014 academic year is $2,835 per semester."
Students in graduate and accelerated programs of study who are interested in living in The Patrick Henry for a portion of the Summer 2013 term may be given the opportunity to pay for accommodations on a prorated basis. Contact Jennifer Martin, Coordinator of Residence Life for more information.

Summer 2013 Housing
|
Summer housing is now available! Please read on for some important information:
Jeff Summer Living Grant:
Jefferson College of Health Sciences is currently offering students the opportunity to take advantage of the “Jeff Summer Living Grant,” which will allow you to live in our residence hall at The Patrick Henry Building in beautiful downtown, Roanoke, Virginia this summer for just $1,000—a 33% discount!
Reserve your space early—there’s limited space and we will award grants on a first-come, first-served basis!
General Information:
· All amenities, including electricity, water/sewer/trash, Internet, cable and access to an on-site gym are included in the housing fee.
· Any student wishing to reserve a space in the residence hall for the summer will need to submit a Summer 2013 Residence Life Contract, along with a Roommate Request Form, both of which can be found below.
· No deposit is required; however, the contract is BINDING once received.
· Any damages to the apartment caused by the student will be billed to the student’s JCHS account at the conclusion of the summer term.
· Any questions regarding whether financial aid will cover the summer term should be directed to the Financial Aid office at (540) 985-8492.
· For those interested in living in The Patrick Henry for only a portion of the summer, prorated rates may be available on a case-by-case basis.
· Students should take time to familiarize themselves with important residence hall policies, procedures and expectations. This information can be found in the JCHS Student Handbook.
· Students do not need to be enrolled in summer classes in order to live in The Patrick Henry for the summer. However, they do need to be enrolled for the fall semester.
For Current Residents of The Patrick Henry:
· You will NOT have to vacate the residence hall between the spring and summer terms!
· You will be allowed to remain in your current assignment.
· If you intend to live in The Patrick Henry for the 2013-2014 academic year, you will NOThave to vacate the residence hall between the summer and fall terms! (It is possible that your room assignment may change for the fall term)
Students Not Currently Residing in The Patrick Henry:
· The move-in date for students who are not currently living in the residence hall is Friday, May 17th.
· Students who live in the residence hall during the summer and do not plan to remain in the residence hall for the 2013-2014 academic year must move-out no later than Wednesday, August 7th.

Policies
|
Residents are expected to act as responsible citizens and are accountable for knowing and observing the policies and regulations set forth in the Residence Life Handbook and all other pertinent College publications. All residents, regardless of location, are responsible for the rules listed in this Handbook and additional rules according to location. Violations of residence hall policies may result in judicial sanctions, up to and including suspension or expulsion from the residence hall.
The Residence Life Handbook is included here. Individual copies of this Handbook are provided to all residential students when they move into the residence hall. Important Dates
