|We're not here to take over the parenting role.
We are here to help students develop into responsible and mature individuals and health care professionals.
What is student development?
We provide opportunities for students to achieve competence in academic and non-academic areas.
We challenge them while also providing support.
We teach them how to manage emotions, from anger to self-esteem and everything in between.
We help them become independent so that they are no longer dependent but rather interdependent on others.
We encourage them to determine who they really are on many different levels.
We support the development of positive relationships with family, friends, faculty, and staff.
We help them identify and pursue their purpose.
We offer assistance as they develop their values and figure out what they stand for.
How do we help? As student services staff we,
Make ourselves available during "office hours" and beyond.
We invite and welcome students coming to us with problems. Student services staff are "problem solvers".
We provide free academic and personal counseling.
We intervene if we become aware of potentially serious or life-threatening behavior.
We treat students as adults and professionals by getting them involved in solving their own problems.
We respect students' privacy yet don't always promise confidentiality - after all, we may need to get others involved in order to ensure students' well-being.
We don't serve as "baby-sitters" for students.
We are concerned with students' safety and educate them on ways to keep themselves safe.
We expect students to take responsibility for their actions.
We are here to support and serve students.
What do we expect of students? We expect students to take responsibility for their lives and be responsible for:
Their behavioral choices.
Following the rules.
Developing health, study, eating, and sleep habits.
Seeking academic or personal assistance when needed.
Being a positive member of the College "family".
It is hard for most parents to "let go" of their student; however, support is available for students so parents and families know they are in good hands.
There is a web of support for students. Each of these individuals is here to assist your student to become a mature individual and health care professional. These people include:
Your student's advisor
Your student's program director
Student and professional residence life staff
The Disabilities Coordinator
Student Services Staff
Other College Staff and Administration
Parents and family members can assist their student in this transition through the following actions:
Take emotional issues seriously and encourage your student to talk with someone - RA,
counselor, advisor, faculty member, etc.
Send healthy snacks.
Suggest ways to incorporate physical activity into their schedule.
Leave the lines of communication open.
Regularly ask what he/she is learning.
Encourage them to seek academic assistance at the first grade of "D" or "F" in any
Help him/her figure out how to balance, work, social life, and school activities.
Set limits if your student is using a credit card you provided.
Work up a budget.
Encourage personal safety.
Role model what you want to see in your student.
Remember this is a time of transition and growth.

Students' Rights of Access to Their Educational Record
|Students and their parents/family members are often surprised by the limited information which can be released from student records to anyone other than the student due to the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974.
For instance, students? parents or employers are not automatically allowed access to their grades, class attendance, or results of disciplinary proceedings.

Students? Rights of Access
To Their Educational Record
Jefferson College of Health Sciences complies with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), as amended (often referred to as the ?Buckley Amendment?), which protects the privacy of educational records, establishes students? rights to inspect their records, provides guidelines for correcting inaccurate or misleading data, and permits students to file complaints with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act Office. Specifically, students are afforded the following rights with respect to their educational records:
a. The right to inspect and review the student?s educational records within 45 days of the day Jefferson College of Health Sciences receives a request for access. Students should submit to the Registrar, Dean for Academic and Student Services, or program director written requests that identify the record (s) they wish to inspect. The Jefferson College of Health Sciences? official will make arrangements for access and notify the student of the time and place where the records may be inspected. If the records are not maintained by the Jefferson College of Health Sciences official to whom the request was submitted, that employee will advise the student of the correct official to whom the request should be addressed.
b. The right to request an amendment of the students? educational records. Students may ask Jefferson College of Health Sciences to amend a record that they believe is inaccurate or misleading. They should write the Jefferson College of Health Sciences official responsible for the record, clearly identify the part of the record they want changed, and specify why it is inaccurate or misleading. If Jefferson College of Health Sciences decides not to amend the record as requested by the student, Jefferson College of Health Sciences will notify the student of the decision and advise the student of his/her right to a hearing regarding the request for amendment. Additional information regarding the hearing procedures will be provided to the student when notified of the right to a hearing.
c. The right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information
contained in the student?s educational records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosures without consent: The right to inspect a student?s academic record is limited to the student. Disability and other
health/medically related records are not part of a student?s educational record. Access to student?s records, except directory information which may be released, is never granted to individuals from off campus requesting information, unless the student involved has given written permission, or as applicable law requires. Directory information is defined as the student?s name, program of study, degrees granted, classification, enrollment status and dates of attendance. Students may restrict access to their directory information by contacting the Registrar?s Office and filing a written request.
In addition, Jefferson College of Health Sciences will release announcements
of academic honors and awards upon authorization by the student to do so, and Jefferson College of Health Sciences will publish, for internal use, a student directory, that includes names, addresses and campus telephone numbers. To further minimize the risk of improper disclosure, academic and disciplinary records are kept separate.
Jefferson College of Health Sciences expects that students will discuss their
academic progress with their parents. Students may authorize disclosure of
information to parents or anyone else by completing a Consent to Disclose
Information from Educational Records Form available in the Registrar?s Office.
Upon request, Jefferson College of Health Sciences will exercise its discretion
to disclose information from the student?s educational records to authorized
individuals under the following circumstances: 1) through the written consent
of the student; 2) by submission of evidence that the parents declared the
student as a dependent on their most recent federal income tax form; 3) and in
compliance with a subpoena. In cases of divorce, separation or custody, when
only one parent declares the student as dependant, an institution may grant
equal access to information from the student?s educational records. However,
when access is given to one parent, Jefferson College of Health Sciences must
grant equal access to the other parent upon request, unless there is a court order, state stature, or legally binding document stating otherwise. One exception that permits disclosure without consent is disclosure to school officials with legitimate educational interests. A school official is a person employed by Jefferson College of Health Sciences in an administrative, supervisory, academic, research, or support staff position (including security personnel); a person or company whom Jefferson College of Health Sciences has contracted (such as an attorney, auditor, or an official agent); a person serving on the Board of Trustees; or a student serving on an official committee, such as a disciplinary or grievance committee, or assisting another school official in performing his or her tasks. A school official has a legitimate educational interest if the official needs to review an educational record in order to fulfill his or her professional responsibility.
d. The student has the right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of
Education concerning the alleged failures by Jefferson College of Health
Sciences to comply with requirements of FERPA. The name and address of the office that administers FERPA is The Family Policy Compliance Offices, U.S. Department of Education, 400 Maryland Avenue SW, Washington, D.C.
