  • Carolyn Finney, JCHS College Receptionist and front line interceptor of visitors to Admissions/ Financial Aid, celebrated her 20th anniversary with JCHS on Friday Feb. 29! In addition, Jeannie successfully defended her doctoral thesis at Case Western Reserve University’s Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing and is now officially Jeannie Garxber, D.N.P., R.N. The title of her research is, “Nurse, Physician and Medical Resident Attitudes Toward Collaboration and Servant Leadership.”

  • Rebecca Greer, B.B.A., M.S.N., R.N., Director of AD Nursing Program, successfully defended her doctoral thesis at Case Western Reserve University’s Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing with a Doctorate of Nursing and is now officially Rebecca Greer, D.N.P., R.N.. The title of her research is, “Cultural Competence and Faculty Development.”

  • Monty D. Gross, R.N., Faculty in Nursing, spent the summer working on a set of PowerPoint slides that will be available online for instructors when the new edition of the Black & Hawkes Med-Surg textbook comes out in 2009. There are between 2,500 and 3,000 slides for all 82 chapters of the textbook. In addition, he co-authored a book chapter on women’s and men’s health in the book, “Community and Public Health Nursing,” which was published in October 2007. Monty also presented research on instructional design processes of expert nurse educators at a national conference in November 2007. Finally, Monty was named Basic Literacy Tutor of the Year. The honor is given annually by the Literacy Volunteers of Roanoke Valley in recognition of the work completed with that organization.

  • Judith McKeon, Director of Admissions, received a Master of Arts degree in Social Sciences from Hollins University in May 2007. The title of her thesis was, “The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act of 1998: A Review of the Laws’ Foundations and its Impact.”

In addition, Dr. Southard also recently returned from Salt Lake City where he gave a presentation at the 22nd Annual Meeting of the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. The presentation titled "The Pleasure Trap: When and when not to listen to your body" addressed the sociocultural history of the human diet and treatment implications for the current obesity epidemic.

  • Linda Williams, JCHS Registrar, presented, “Desktop Diploma Printing: Taking Charge and Saving Money” at the annual VACRAO (the Virginia Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers) conference held at Virginia Tech.
