Fifth Annual JCHS Spirit Day - Jan. 31, 2012

JCHS Winter Commencement 2011 - Dec. 16, 2011
The 2011 JCHS Winter Commencement Ceremony was held on Friday, Dec. 16, 2011 at the Jefferson Center in Roanoke, Virginia. The ceremony took place in Shaftman Hall, and we welcomed 98 new graduates into the ranks of our alumni from programs like Physician Assistant, Occupational Therapy, Nursing and Biomedical Sciences. JCHS BSN Pinning Ceremony 2011 - Dec. 15, 2011
On Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011, the JCHS Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program held its Pinning Ceremony for the Winter Class of 2011 at the Scottish Rite Auditorium in Roanoke, just a short distance from the JCHS campus at Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital. JCHS Alumni Association Hosts First Annual Golf Tournament - Sept. 30, 2011
On Friday, Sept. 30, 2011, the JCHS Alumni Association held their first annual golf tournament at the Botetourt Golf and Swim Club. All proceeds from the event went to support the JCHS Scholarship Fund, which helps our students in financial need. Click here to see the slideshow!

New JCHS Sign Installed at CRCH - Sept. 16, 2011
On Friday, Sept. 16, 2011, new exterior signage was installed at Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital, home to the campus of JCHS. The new sign formerly resided on the Reid Center and found a new home on the tower at CRCH, where it will soon be illuminated. Click here to see the slideshow!

JCHS OTA Class of 2012 Welcomes Some Fine, Feathery Friends to Campus - Aug. 22, 2011
On Monday, Aug. 22, 2011, the JCHS Occupational Therapy Assistant Program welcomed Dr. Kerri Cooper-Bailey and her husband Phillip to one of their classes, along with a few of their feathered friends. JCHS Convocation 2011 - Aug. 19, 2011
On Friday, Aug. 19, 2011, JCHS held its annual Convocation Ceremony. The event is held every year at the beginning of the fall semester to welcome our students to campus. On Friday, July 15, 2010, we hosted an event on campus to welcome the Coventry Virginia Commonwealth Games’ 2011 featured speaker: John Register, a Paralympian medalist and motivational speaker. JCHS Medical Laboratory Science Program
Commencement Ceremony - June 10, 2011
On Friday, June 10, 2011, the JCHS Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) Program graduated its first class as part of the College during a commencement ceremony in the sixth floor auditorium at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. On Friday, Dec. 17, 2010, the JCHS Physician Assistant Program held their 2010 White Coat Ceremony at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine in downtown Roanoke, Virginia. JCHS Ribbon Cutting Ceremony & Open House Reception - Nov. 12, 2010
On Friday, Nov. 12, 2010, JCHS hosted a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and Open House Reception in celebration of our new spaces at Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital. At the event, we welcomed colleagues from Carilion Clinic, local governments, other colleges and universities, and more. Activities kicked off with remarks from JCHS President Nathaniel L. Bishop, Carilion Clinic CEO Dr. Edward Murphy and Student Senate Chair Cornelius Powell, followed by a ribbon cutting in the third floor lobby. Many of the attendees then participated in tours of our new spaces, including looks at the tenth, ninth, sixth, fifth and fourth floors. A Taste of Jefferson 2010 - Nov. 3, 2010
On Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2010 the JCHS Student Affairs Department sponsored "A Taste of Jefferson International Day," a progressive food tasting event. Students, faculty and staff were invited to "travel" through different countries with each participating program or department, sampling food and having their passports stamped. Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010 was a beautiful autumn day in the Roanoke Valley and we took advantage of the unusually warm, sunny weather to celebrate our Fourth Annual Homecoming Reunion on the JCHS campus. From a great picnic lunch at historic Fralin House with live music, a caricaturist and alumni information booths to guided tours of new JCHS spaces at Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital, our Homecoming Reunion was an event to remember!

Take Back the Night 2010 - April 20, 2010
On Tuesday, April 20, 2010, JCHS held our first annual Take Back the Night event on campus. The event was hosted by the JCHS VOICE (Violence Can End) Program and included speakers from JCHS, Carilion Clinic, SARA (Sexual Assault Response and Awareness) and Mrs. Gil Harrington, mother of Morgan Harrington. There was also an open forum for anyone who wanted to speak about their personal experiences and offer hope. On Dec. 9, 2009, The JCHS VOICE (Violence Can End) Program held an event to decorate the JCHS holiday tree in the Dog House, the College's Student Union. At the event, participants made a pledge to use their VOICE to help end violence. They signed the pledge by autographing a holiday ornament and placing it on the JCHS tree. On Friday, Oct. 9, 2009, Jefferson College of Health Sciences celebrated National PA Day. Physician Assistant (PA) Day is celebrated annually in October. The date was chosen to commemorate the anniversary of the first graduating Physician Assistant class at Duke University on Oct. 6, 1967. On Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009, several JCHS students and staff participated in the 14th Annual Marine 5K Mud Run at Greenhill Park in Roanoke, Virginia. Proceeds from entry fees for the event go to support local charities in the Roanoke area, including Toys for Tots and Camp Roanoke, a camp for underprivileged children. JCHS PA Program Holds 2009 White Coat Graduation Ceremony - Aug. 7, 2009
On Aug. 7, 2009, the JCHS Physician Assistant program graduated 37 PAs during the annual “White Coat Ceremony,” held on the Roanoke College campus. The graduation event is called a white coat ceremony because the graduates receive the traditional clinical white garments that they will wear when practicing as a PA. Carilion Clinic Heart Camp Participants Visit JCHS to Learn About Healthcare Careers - Aug. 5, 2009
On Aug. 5, 2009, JCHS hosted students involved in the Carilion Clinic Heart Camp. The camp consisted of 12 rising eighth and ninth graders from area schools. JCHS OT/OTA Departments Celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Moon Landing - July 20, 2009
On July 16, 1969, Apollo 11 launched from the Kennedy Space Center carrying crew members Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Edwin E. Aldrin Jr. Four days later, Armstrong became the first man to step on the moon. Forty years later, the JCHS Occupational Therapy and Occupational Therapy Assistant Departments celebrated this historic event with a fun, interactive display on July 20, 2009. 2009 Virginia Commonwealth Games Kickoff at JCHS - July 17, 2009
On Friday, July 17, 2009, we hosted an event on campus to welcome the Coventry Virginia Commonwealth Games’ 2009 featured speaker: Tiffany Roberts, a nationally renowned professional soccer player, Olympic gold medalist and co-head coach of women’s soccer at Virginia Commonwealth University. The event took place in the third floor lobby area of CRCH and was a great success.

JCHS Physician Assistant Program Makes a Donation to Trust House - June 10, 2009
The Captain Sean Grimes Student Society of the Jefferson College of Health Sciences (JCHS) Physician Assistant (PA) Program received one of two national “Project-in-A-Box” Healthy Community Awards from the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) in May 2009. As a result of this award, the JCHS PA Program received $500 for the student society and $500 to be presented to a charity of their choice in Roanoke. As part of the JCHS Spring 2009 Community Hour Speaker Series, WSLS Anchor and Health Team leader Karen McNew visited JCHS on Feb. 3, 2009. WSLS is the local NBC affiliate in the Roanoke area. Ms. McNew spoke to JCHS students, faculty and staff about her job and how she handles a typical day. The Debut of the Star Line Trolley - Nov. 12, 2008
The Star Line, a new trolley bus with a nostalgic design, debuted on Nov. 12, 2008 with a weekday loop connecting downtown Roanoke with Carilion Memorial Hospital and stops in between. The downtown trolley network aims to provide hospital employees, patients and their families, downtown workers and visitors a convenient alternative to get around without having to drive and find parking. New JCHS Fitness Center - Fall 2008
In fall 2008, JCHS opened it's new Fitness Center on the fourth floor of Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital. The center features machines, free weights, treadmills and stair climbers. All JCHs students, faculty and staff are welcome to use the center and enjoy the views of the Roanoke Valley.

JCHS Celebrates PA Day 2008 - Oct. 10, 2008
On Friday, Oct. 10, 2008, Jefferson College of Health Sciences celebrated National PA Day. Physician Assistant (PA) Day is celebrated annually from in October. The date was chosen to commemorate the anniversary of the first graduating Physician Assistant class at Duke University on Oct. 6, 1967. October 6 is also the birthday of Dr. Eugene Stead, the founder of the PA profession.

On Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008, JCHS celebrated Constitution Day and held Student Senate Elections at Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital in the third floor lobby and in the JCHS Museum. Activities included a JCHS choir performance, free food, the reading of the U.S. Constitution and representatives from various political campaigns.

JCHS Remembers 9/11 - Sept. 11, 2008
On Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008, JCHS held a 9/11 Remembrance in commemoration of the seventh anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in New York and Washington, DC. The event was held in the JCHS Museum, located on the third floor of Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital and included a reading of the names all all who lost their lives on that day.

The Great JCHS Squirrel Capture! - February 2008
In early February 2008, a squirrel fell into the pit on the side of the Reid Center facing the Community Hospital Building. After watching him try to escape for three days, the folks in Science and Mathematics decided to help him out. Mike Slaughter brought in a live capture trap and he was finally lured in with peanut butter and pretzels (the squirrel, not Mike).
