Could you use more money to help you pay for school? The JCHS Office of Financial Aid can help! There are now private scholarship opportunities available and Financial Aid staff can help you determine whether these opportunities are right for you.

Applications for all of the scholarships listed below are available at the JCHS Office of Financial Aid or you can download copies by clicking on the links in each scholarship section.


Springtree Health & Rehabilitation Center Scholarship

  • Must be currently enrolled as a PTA/OTA student at Jefferson College of Health Sciences. 

2010 Nancy Talbot Scholarship Award

Amount Awarded: one $30,000 award and up to ten $15,000 awards

General Eligibility Criteria:

  • Have at least two semesters (24 credit hours or more) remaining to complete an undergraduate degree as of the beginning of the 2010 fall academic term. 
  • Be women currently residing in the United States or Canada.
  • Be women who have earned a high school diploma or their GED on or before September 2000.
  • Be enrolled or planning to enroll in a full- or part-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited 2 or 4 year college, university or vocational-technical school.
  • Be attending the full 2010-11 academic year and receiving a degree no earlier than May 2011.


Association of Family Practice Physician Assistants (AFPPA) Masters Degree Scholarships

General Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be a previously graduated Physician Assistant Student who has returned to school to pursue a Masters degree.
  • Program may be on-site or a distance learning design.
  • Member of the AFPPA.
  • Employed in primary care. 
  • In good academic standing.
  • Preference will be given to longstanding AFPPA members, those demonstrating professional leadership and community service.

Association of Family Practice Physician Assistants (AFPPA) First- and Second-Year Student Scholarships

Jim Meeks PA-C, DFAAPA Memorial Association of Family Practice Physician Assistants (AFPPA) Student Scholarship

  • Demonstration of a commitment to Family Practice, Rural Health and Education of physician assistants and nurse practitioners.
  • Members of the AFPPA and in good academic standing.
  • Humble willingness to serve, putting others first, being a teacher.
  • Encouragement to move to and serve the underserved in a rural town
  • Demonstration of clinical expertise, distilling confidence in patients and supervising physician
  • Setting the example of competent, eager service
  • Demonstratrating what a PA should be.

Southside Virginia Tobacco Loan Forgiveness Program

Amount Awarded: $3,750 for a full-time student; $1,875 for a part-time student

General Eligibility Criteria:

  • $3,750 for a full-time student (15+ undergraduate hours, 9+ graduate hours).
     
  • $1,875 for a part-time student (less than 15 undergraduate hours, less than 9 graduate hours).
     
  • This is a loan, if the student does not return to the counties covered by the program to work, the student must pay back the money borrowed.
     
  • The loan is completely forgiven if the recipient works for one year longer than the period of time that they received funds. For example, if you received money for three years, you must work four years to have the loan completely forgiven.
     
  • This is open to everyone living in the Southside region.
     
  • This is good for one degree only.
     
  • This is only good for people to plan to attend four-year accredited colleges.
     
  • This can be used for in-state or out-of-state, private or public colleges and universities.
     
  • It is only open to people who live in the covered counties.
     
  • It is good for any major and the student can return to work in any field.

  • Provide proof of financial need and potential for completing a health career program
  • The vast majority of funds are awarded to Virginia residents and then to students attending Virginia schools.  
  • Your GPA must be 2.75 or better before being considered.  

Student must pay back the unused portion of the award if he/she does not complete a health-related program. You are not eligible to apply for a spring semester scholarship if you received one for the academic year that covers that spring semester. (Example: You are not eligible to apply for the 2012 spring semester scholarship if you were already awarded for 2011-2012 academic year)


Kitas and Lutsko Family Foundation Scholarship

April 28, 2011—no exceptions.

Mary Marshall Nursing Scholarship for Licensed Practical Nurses

The application is in three parts:

  • Sections 1-7
  • Section 8: Statement of Financial Need
  • Section 9: Statement of Scholastic Attainment & Section 10: School of Nursing Recommendation

General Eligibility Criteria:
Please ensure that you read and understand the following information prior to applying for a scholarship award. Failure to comply with any of these application requirements will result in the applicant being ineligible for a scholarship.

  1. All items on the application form must be answered.
  2. Applicants must be a high school graduate or have a GED. (Proof must be submitted along with application).
  3. Applicants must be enrolled as a full-time or part-time nursing student and engage in nursing study at the time of the award. Applicants enrolled as part-time students must report the total number of hours they are taking.
  4. Applications and transcripts must be postmarked by June 30 for the academic year beginning in the Fall of that calendar year. Applications and/or transcripts postmarked after the above date will not be considered for scholarship awards. Applications will not be accepted in The Office of Minority Health and Public Health Policy prior to May 1.
  5. It is the responsibility of the applicant to see that:

a.       The application form is completed entirely;

b.       All original signatures are obtained on the application forms; and

c.       Application and official grade transcript are mailed prior to June 30th to:

Roanoke Valley Academy of Medicine Alliance Foundation (RAMA)

General Eligibility Criteria:

Students must have attended a high school in the Roanoke Valley or have lived and worked in the Roanoke Valley for at least one year. This would include Roanoke City and County (including Vinton), Salem, Botetourt County, Franklin County, and Craig County and additional regional areas at the discretion of the RAMA Foundation Board.

Students must be accepted into and/or enrolled in a traditional, medically-related program in the Roanoke Valley prior to receiving funds from RAMA.

To be considered, the Scholarship Committee must receive a COMPLETE APPLICATION PACKET by the date indicated. Any application received with a postmark later than May 5, 2011 will not be considered.
    1. Completed application, including essay.
    2. A copy of the 1040 tax form of person responsible for financial support.
    3. Three letters of reference, one of which must be from a current teacher or faculty member in an academic subject. Letters must be included in the application packet.
    4. Authorization for release of record information.
    5. Official transcript from current school or last school attended. Late transcripts will make applicant ineligible.
    6. Financial aid officer form completed and signed.

Virginia Business and Professional Women's Foundation

Young Women’s Scholarship
This scholarship is intended for any currently enrolled female student who will complete high school during the 2011/2012 academic year:
 
  • Educational goals include study at an accredited college or university in the near future is eligible to apply
  • Applicants must reside in the Cities of Roanoke or Salem, the Counties of Roanoke, Botetourt or Craig or the Town of Vinton    
Women’s Scholarships and Lorraine and Hal Jones Jr. Scholarship Information
This scholarship is intended for women who will be attending an accredited college or university for undergraduate study in 2012-2013 and who also meet the following criteria: 
 
  • High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • At least 21 years of age when beginning undergraduate studies
  • Is enrolled or has been accepted in an accredited college/university during the current academic year
  • Must reside in the Cities of Roanoke or Salem, Counties of Roanoke, Botetourt or Craig, or the Town of Vinton.
