LEARNING & WRITING CENTER (LWC)
Tutoring Services |
 |
LWC resources are available to all JCHS students to help in their academic pursuits. The LWC has access to current textbooks, other supporting books, supplemental handouts, online resources through Student Central (in Blackboard), a computer lab, and tutors.
LWC peer tutors are faculty-recommended and well-trained students who have demonstrated strong subject proficiency and the ability to communicate concepts. Tutors are instructed to help students become more independent in their academic pursuits. All LWC services, including tutoring, are free.
LWC tutors will:
-
explain concepts that you are having problems with or have specific questions about, so that you are able to continue your work independently;
-
help you to reach the answer yourself or to find your own answer(s);
-
help you ensure that you are following the directions of your assignment correctly;
-
offer constructive feedback and encouragement;
-
offer study guidance and tips;
-
direct you to the many self-help resources available to you.
LWC tutors will not:
-
“give you the answer” to a problem or do your work for you;
-
teach or explain course material to you if you have not yet read your assigned reading, as tutoring cannot make up for a lack of careful textbook reading and regular class and lab attendance;
-
correct or “check” your assignments or papers; or
-
perform “rush” tutoring (i.e. tutoring when you have not given yourself enough time to complete your assignment or learn the coursework).

Tutoring Procedures
To request a tutoring appointment, all students must complete the Request for Tutor Form and submit it by email to the LWC Coordinator, Emily Moore, at ehmoore@jchs.edu or put it in the drop box in the LWC (CRCH 507). Completing a Request for Tutor form does not guarantee you an appointment.
If a tutor is found for you and an appointment scheduled, the coordinator will contact you by email with the date and time. Your tutor will meet you in the LWC (CRCH 507).
For your appointment, you must:
-
have attended class and made a reasonable attempt to learn the material (2 hours outside of class per 1 hour in class; e.g., 6 hours for a 3-credit class);
-
arrive promptly and be prepared (i.e., read class material, attempted to do homework, prepared questions);
-
bring your textbook, notes, and other relevant materials;
-
be actively involved in working on problems and discussing class material;
-
ask the tutor to clarify if you don’t understand something the tutor has explained.
Please be aware of the following:
- Requests are accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Tutoring sessions begin after the first week and end during the last week of classes.
- Please be patient with scheduling sessions. Requests may, but do not generally, take up to two weeks to confirm based on schedules, availability, and communication.
- Appointments are limited by the tutors available, the subject(s) they are qualified to tutor, and the number of students seeking assistance.
- Although every attempt to fill each request will be made, there is no guarantee that all requests will be filled.

Tutoring Policies
- You must be a student at JCHS and must regularly attend class for the course in which you are receiving tutoring.
- You are limited to two 1-hour sessions per week. When weekly drop-in sessions are available, attending one of these sessions does not count toward your limit.
- All tutoring takes place in the Learning Commons (CRCH 5th Floor), Doghouse, or cafeteria unless otherwise approved.
- The tutor is not required to wait longer than 10 minutes past the appointed time. If a session is missed because you are late without notification, it is considered a no-show.
- To change or cancel an appointment, notify the coordinator 12 hours in advance of the appointed time; failure to do so will be considered a no-show.
- After a single no-show, you must contact the coordinator before tutoring can resume. If you accrue two no-shows for reasons other than illness, family emergency, or a college-sponsored event, you may not be permitted appointments for the remainder of the semester.
- Students who display discourteous or abusive behavior to their tutors or who abuse the scheduling system and/or our policies will forfeit their right to receive tutoring.
- Tutors and tutees are expected to keep the LWC coordinator informed of any issues concerning tutoring sessions (absences, tardiness, conflicts, participation, etc.).
Tutoring is a privilege, not a right.
Students who violate any of these aforementioned policies and procedures may be denied the privilege of individual tutoring at any point in the semester. Tutoring policies are subject to change without notice.
