Biomedical Sciences

Biomedical Sciences

If you are interested in a career in health care, but are undecided about which field you are most interested in, a bachelor of science in Biomedical Sciences would launch your career. This program is designed to maximally prepare you for medical school, physician assistant programs, dental school, pharmacy school and other professional schools.  For the student who desires to further their education through graduate studies, we provide a strong background in the disciplines of biology, chemistry and physiology.

Our graduates are prepared to work in a diverse selection of commercial laboratories, such as pharmaceutical, forensic, clinical and industrial.  On the business side of healthcare, the pharmaceutical industry is always searching for individuals with science backgrounds to work as drug representatives.

This program is four years in length and requires you to successfully complete a minimum of 126 semester credits.  The program has a strong biology and chemical sciences component.  The program emphasis is on human medical applications.

You are expected to have a desire to learn and a willingness to work and to be caring and respectful of others.  We teach you as an individual, we prepare you for a career in health care, and we help you on your path to helping others.  We also have a strong emphasis on real-life learning situations, therefore, graduates of our program leave us with lots of experience.

While we are a relatively new program (5 years old) our students have been very successful.  We have prior students in medical school in both Virginia and West Virginia and students in physician assistant programs in Virginia, North Carolina and West Virginia.  We have students in dental school and pharmacy graduate programs.  One of our first graduates recently completed a masters of science in forensic sciences.  Another student is working on her doctorate in biochemistry.

Clinical Laboratory Scientists (also referred to as Medical Technologists) are certified healthcare professionals that perform diagnostic procedures in a clinical laboratory. These procedures help physicians diagnose and treat diseases. Clinical Laboratory Scientists may also work for pharmaceutical companies, veterinarian offices, medical research laboratories and crime laboratories.

The curriculum is designed to give students a solid academic background in the areas of biology and chemistry that will prepare them for entry into a 1 year Clinical Laboratory Sciences program with an affiliated medical center. Students who complete the accredited training program can qualify for a B.S. in Biomedical Sciences with a concentration in Clinical Laboratory Sciences.
