Russ Barksdale is the President and CEO of Friendship Retirement Community—the Commonwealth of Virginia’s largest long-term healthcare provider and largest retirement community.
Friendship’s corporations extend beyond long-term care into healthcare retail, physician offices, and post-acute rehabilitation and occupational therapy. These include: a 373-bed Health and Rehabilitation Center; a 363-unit independent living program; a 96-unit Eastwood Assisted Living Residence; a retail pharmacy; an affiliated on-site End-Stage-Renal Dialysis program; physician offices; a licensed home care agency; and, other health related programs.

Before coming to the Roanoke Valley, Mr. Barksdale had led all aspects of senior care and healthcare services and operations at numerous locations in New York and New Jersey, most recently as president and CEO of Hempstead Healthcare, a management company that operated four facilities in suburban New York City.
Mr. Barksdale has broad experience in senior-related, for-profit and not-for-profit healthcare services, including long-term care, assisted living, home health, hospice and a variety of medical and hospital-based services.
Among his career highlights, he has served as:
· CEO of a management company responsible for four facilities.
· Vice president of revenue enhancement and business development at Catholic Health Services, a five hospital, three nursing home, fully integrated healthcare provider with almost 20,000 employees.
· Vice president of business development at Community Health Systems, part of a multi-state hospital system with more than 70 hospitals.
· Managing member of a company that owns three assisted living and independent living facilities in New Jersey.
Mr. Barksdale has a bachelor’s degree from Penn State University and a master’s degree from Rutgers University. He and his wife, Diane, have three sons. He’s a native of Long Island, N.Y., with family ties in Bristol, Tennessee and Duffield, Virginia.
More about Mike Shannon
Michael Shannon is the Chief Financial Officer for Friendship Retirement Community. Mr. Shannon graduated from Virginia Tech with a Baccalaureate Degree in Accounting in 1986 and has been a CPA since 1988. He has over twenty-four years experience in the Long Term Care industry and has held positions ranging from Financial Reporting Senior Accountant for Beverly Enterprises, a Fortune 500 nursing home operator to Controller for a nursing home chain with operations in six states and revenues of $500 million.
Additionally, Mr. Shannon has worked in public accounting for Price Waterhouse and KPMG Peat Marwick as a senior auditor with clients in the Financial Services and Healthcare industries. In his position as Chief Financial Officer, Mr. Shannon oversees all aspects of billing, payroll, information technology, pharmacy, accounting, and finance.
