Associate of Applied Science in Occupational Therapy Assistant
at Jefferson College of Health Sciences

The Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) Program at JCHS is now the oldest OTA program in Virginia. Established in 1992, we are also the only private college in the state to offer an OTA degree.

Program Highlights

Earning an OTA degree at JCHS could be the key to opening important doors in your future as a healthcare professional. Our program offers students unique learning opportunities and advantages you won't find anywhere else, including:

  • Small class sizes—25 students on average—that allow our faculty to provide students with a more focused and individualized education. Our OTA faculty-to-student ratio is 1-to-15.
  • "Hands-on" instruction in the classroom, in labs and in the field.

  • A chance to learn with and from fellow students who come to JCHS with a variety of life experiences and skills.

  • A program of study that not only provides you with the clinical skills you will need in your new career, but also learning opportunities and discussions that will enhance your knowledge of cultural diversity and social issues.

Kyndal Lyn Jones, '12, OTA
“Whether it's learning in the classroom or performing fieldwork off campus, the JCHS Occupational Therapy Assistant program has provided me with lots of hands-on learning opportunities. I feel like these experiences have enhanced the quality and depth of my education."

Learning By Participating
At JCHS, we believe students learn most effectively through participation. As a result, OTA lectures often involve student presentations followed by labs where new techniques can be practiced.

Our OTA students are also encouraged to participate in student and professional groups such as the Student Occupational Therapy Association (SOTA Club), the Virginia Occupational Therapy Association and the American Occupational Therapy Association. This active participation promotes growth both personally and professionally.

Students also learn through hands-on patient interactions on- and off-campus. Our fieldwork coordinator places students in facilities where their clinical skills can best be developed—and these placements can be in locations across the country or right here in the heart of Virginia.

A Degree That's in Demand
JCHS OTA graduates are, on average, employed within six weeks of commencement. In fact, the demand for OTAs is so high that many employers routinely call the College about recruiting new graduates. The program maintains a strong reputation for excellence across the state and beyond, as our JCHS OTA alumni provide occupation-based patient care and advance into management positions.
