Equipment

Requests for equipment reservations can be submitted three ways:

1) Fill out an equipment reservation form at the LRC circulation desk
2) Download form from LRC homepage and email to jelacate@jchs.edu
3) Call the circulation desk (88273) to give us the request over the phone
4) Print a form from the LRC homepage and return to circulation desk in LRC

To make sure the piece of equipment you need will be available please give us your requests as early in the semester as possible.

Pick-up

To pick up your equipment, check at the circulation desk. Let us know at this time if you have had a room change since you made your reservation.

Fixed projectors/pc combos exist in RMs 217, 310, 415, 418, 718. These remain in classrooms.

Responsibilities

While the equipment is checked out in your name you are responsible for its care and proper treatment--even during times when it is out of your sight (e.g., if you have a student return the equipment or if you leave the equipment in a room overnight).

· Let the LRC staff know immediately if you have a problem with the equipment.
· Fixed units are locked in closets in RMs 418 and 718.

Drop off

Bring your equipment to the door across from the PTA lab. When you get off the elevator on the sixth floor, turn left, go to the first door on left and ring bell. Always inform an LRC staff member when you return equipment so that we can bring it in from the hallway.

LRC staff members will only collect equipment from classrooms when it has been signed out for use after hours. If you are using equipment during the day always return it promptly to the LRC.

Interlibrary Loans
The LRC provides Interlibrary Loan (ILL) services to faculty, staff, and students who need to obtain a book or journal article not held in the LRC. Borrowed material should arrive in the LRC any time from two days to a week or more. We will call you when it arrives or place it in your mail box. At present there is no charge for ILL requests.

Please come to the LRC for the form which you need to fill out to request an ILL. Or, you may submit a print-out of a search or reference list with the material that you want clearly marked including your name and the date that you need it. If you have any questions about this service please contact Jose Elacate in the LRC (985-9767).
Course Reserves

Instructors have the option of putting LRC materials and personal copies of books, journal articles, or videos on reserve for student use. Any items which will be heavily used by students should be placed on reserve in order to prevent one student from checking out a book that several students will need to use.

Students will not be allowed to take reserve items out of the LRC unless instructors specify that the items may be checked out overnight. The LRC owns copies of textbooks (excluding lab manuals) used in college courses and these books are automatically placed on reserve at the beginning of the semester.

The LRC’s computer assisted instruction programs may also be placed on reserve. These programs will be installed on computers in the LRC computer lab for students to use at anytime when the LRC is open.

To place items on reserve, fill out the reserve form (see Printable Forms) and return it to the circulation desk in the LRC. You may either bring us a copy of the item you wish to place on reserve or a list of LRC call numbers.

Please allow one week for reserve requests to be processed.

Instruction
How can you prepare your students to excel in the LRC?

Let the LRC’s information literacy program help. Information literacy - the ability to locate, evaluate, and effectively use needed information.

Make an appointment to bring your class to the LRC for:
  • An orientation tour to introduce the students to the facilities and policies of the LRC, e.g. the circulation desk, reference area, online catalog (LRCCH), stacks, computers, AV room, interlibrary loan. This works best when the students have a specific assignment. With advance notice of the assignment, the LRC staff will be prepared to assist the students individually.
  • Bibliographic instruction focused on a particular assignment rather than general information about the LRC. This may involve the computer lab if Internet searching is the best approach. Or, a class may need instruction in using APA format. Again, a specific assignment will make the lesson more meaningful.

Contact Jose Elacate (89767) in the LRC if you would like to consider bringing a class for instruction, a great way to keep up with the Information Age!

The amount of time necessary for your class will depend on the amount of material involved.

Computer Lab

The LRC Computer lab is open during the operating hours of the LRC. Within the lab are 16 computer workstations with Internet access and Microsoft Office 2003. Students, faculty, and staff are able to perform computer based research in the lab accessing the College’s online subscription research databases as well as other Internet sources.

Students may also access their Distance Learning courses through Blackboard in the the lab and check email. In addition, students may utilize computer assisted instructional software. Instructors may request that this software be installed on the lab computers by filling out a reserve sheet at least one week before your students need access to the programs.

Check the LRC online catalog or speak to an LRC staff member for information on what software is owned by the LRC.

E-mail Reference

Originally designed for students working primarily at home, the LRC email reference service has expanded. It is now available to faculty and staff as well as all students.

To access this service, send your inquiries to Jamie Price at jbprice2@jchs.edu . Try to describe what type of information you need in detail. Use your own words.
