"I began my career in health care as a nursing assistant, then trained as a unit secretary and worked in an acute care setting for over ten years before graduating as a physical therapist assistant. I was drawn to physical therapy because I liked the idea of making an impact in someone's life. Knowing that my actions helped improve someone's quality of life brings a me a great sense of fulfillment. I believe that in addition to a sound knowledge base and competent clinical skills, students must graduate with good communication skills and the ability to interact in a professional manner. I expect students to take personal responsibility for their educational process. My philosophy is that health care providers are, and must be, held to a high standard of clinical competence and behavior. The skill level, decision-making, communication and behavior that is expected of a health care professional is strongly emphasized in all the classes that I teach. I also believe in being a role model for my students. I promote active involvement in your professional organization and teach by example. I am a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and a member of the APTAs Education Section. I am also an active member of the Virginia Physical Therapy Association. I am currently the VPTA Mountain District's chair of student relations and a member of the nominating committee. I am currently the secretary of the PTA Special Interest Group and have held past offices of vice-president and president."
