Dr. Valdez will present evidence on how exercise and diet help slow the mental and physical erosion that occurs with aging. A primary focus of his presentation will be the effect of such lifestyles on synapses, which are the sites of communication between neurons. He will draw examples from human and animal models to highlight how various brain and peripheral areas, including skeletal muscles, change through the different stages of life. He will also discuss strategies for discovering molecular factors that could be used as therapeutics for protecting the brain and the motor system.
