LWC General Information
The Learning and Writing Center (LWC) is a resource for students who would like assistance with course material and/or writing. Students work directly with fellow students, faculty, and/or staff in one-on-one and small group settings, both in person and online. The LWC’s goal is to ensure that all students receive the academic support needed to succeed in their classes.

Tutoring and writing support services are available free of charge to all students who seek help. Tutoring and writing assistance services are provided by trained peer tutors, professional tutors, faculty, and staff on an individual or small-group basis.  The LWC also has resources available in a variety of subject areas. These resources include software programs, books, study aids, test-taking assistance, online tutorials, and educational handouts. Workshops are conducted throughout the academic year on topics such as APA Style, test-taking skills, and career resources.

Tutoring Services
LWC peer tutors are faculty-recommended and well-trained students, as well as some professional tutors, who have demonstrated strong subject proficiency and the ability to communicate concepts. Tutors are instructed to help students become more independent in their academic pursuits by teaching strategies for success. For a complete list of tutoring policies and procedures as well as information on supplemental resources, visit the Student Central organization in Blackboard or contact the LWC Coordinator.

Writing Assistance
The Writing Center's goal is to make students better writers by encouraging them to become more confident and proficient editors of their own work. The Writing Center provides assistance with all stages of the writing process, from invention strategies to critiquing a rough draft or finished text. Writing assistance is available for all JCHS students by appointment and during drop-in hours. In addition to one-on-one writing assistance, supplemental online materials and handouts are available on a wide variety of topics. To see what writing resources are available, as well as all writing-related policies and procedures, visit the Student Central organization in Blackboard or contact the LWC Coordinator.

How to Schedule an Appointment
Appointments for tutoring and writing assistance services are scheduled through Starfish, JCHS’s online schedule system.  Students can access Starfish by logging into Blackboard and clicking the Starfish link on the Blackboard home page.  For assistance with scheduling, stop by the LWC lab (CRCH 507) or contact the LWC Coordinator.  When drop-in hours are available, a schedule of these times will be distributed to students and posted in the LWC.
