On campus testing is held at the Educational Testing Center (ETC), which is a 25-station computer lab. Instructors will notify students if testing in the ETC is required. You must schedule an appointment to take an exam at the ETC. (see below)

ETC Location: Room 509, Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital (CRCH)

Hours: The lab is open 24/7. During posted testing hours, access to the lab will be limited. If the ETC is closed for testing, please use one of the other on-campus computer labs:

  • Learning and Writing Center (LWC), Room 507, CRCH
  • Jefferson College Library computer lab, Room 505, CRC

Testing Hours:

Monday: 8:30am—12:00pm, 1:00pm—5:00pm

Tuesday: 8:30am—12:00pm, 1:00pm—5:00pm

Wednesday: 1:00pm—5:00pm

Thursday: 8:30am—12:00pm, 1:00pm—5:00pm

Off-Campus Testing
Text content

There are two options for students to complete exams off-campus when necessary: an online proctoring service (Respondus Monitoring) or an in-person proctor. Jefferson College faculty will work with students to determine which is appropriate for that exam.

Online Proctoring Service

Faculty members determine if students are given the option to use an online proctoring service called Respondus Monitoring. This service allows students to utilize their own computer and webcam to record testing sessions. Instructors will be able to view the recorded sessions for grading purposes. Testing fees are not required for the use of this service.

Students should be aware of and follow these guidelines related to online testing:

  • Students must show picture IDs each time they test.
  • Any questions related to test content, grading, and deadlines should be directed to the instructor of the course.
  • Students should test in locations where they won’t be interrupted.
  • All mobile devices, phones, etc. should be turned off. Conversing with others or usage of cellular phones is prohibited during testing.
  • Desks should be clear of all external materials — books, papers, other computers, or devices — unless otherwise instructed.
  • Students should remain at their desks or workstations for the duration of their tests.
  • Before starting LockDown Browser, students should ensure their webcams are plugged in or enabled.
  • LockDown Browser will prevent students from accessing other websites or applications; students will be unable to exit their tests until all questions are completed and have been submitted for grading.
  • Students using Respondus Monitoring will be recorded during testing to ensure academic integrity.

Off-Campus Proctor

If students are unable to travel to campus to test in the ETC, they may need outside proctors. A proctor is a liaison between Jefferson College and its students to ensure that testing is performed under secure conditions.

Students must submit an Off Campus Proctor Request Form in order to test off-campus, and are responsible for the following:

  • Any fees related to off-campus proctoring, including the cost of postage to return paper tests, are the responsibility of the student.
  • The individual proctor must be approved by the Educational Testing Center and appropriate faculty member(s). Jefferson College reserves the right to reject requests or proctors for any reason.
  • It is the student’s responsibility to know test deadlines when requesting a proctor.  If approved, tests or test access information will be mailed to the proctor within one week of the request.

Proctor Requirements

An acceptable proctor is someone with no conflict of interest in upholding Jefferson College’s Academic Honor Code. Relatives, friends, spouses, neighbors, and co-workers are not acceptable proctors. Examples of appropriate proctors include (but are not limited to):

  • Administrators or librarians at a community college, university, high school, or public library.
  • Learning center personnel
  • College, university, or private testing center professionals
  • The proctor must ensure that all necessary technologies are available and working at the proposed testing site and there is a quiet, conducive testing environment.
  • Only the proctor may handle the exam prior to and following its completion.
  • No copies of the exam other than the copy used for test-taking are to be made at any time.
  • No person other than the proctor and student may view the exam.
  • The student may have access to the exam only during the time period allowed by the instructor.
  • The proctor must follow the instructor’s requirements for administering the exam.  These may include a time limit and specific allowable equipment, such as a calculator and inclusion or exclusion of books, notes, etc.
  • The proctor must prepare the exam (and any relevant materials, e.g., scratch paper) for return by sealing it in an appropriate envelope.
  • Each proctor must have: a valid and working email address, internet access for accessing online tests, and a printer
  • The proctor receives and administers the exam
  • Ensures the identity of test-takers by requiring picture identification
  • Maintains proximity with and is able to observe the student during the entire test-taking period
  • Ensures the test-takers complete the exam according to the instructor’s instructions
